Creation of the Mise -en- scene can influence the way the audience reads the scene / its interpretation of character or situation.
Semiology- the study of signs / symbols - helps create depth to the scene.
Kipps is framed in the door way blocking out everything but leaving his actual skin colour on face. The Woman In Black is behind him.
This image shows that The house they are going to is on an Island and the road / path that leads them there gets covered when the tide comes in so Kipps is isolating himself.
Inside the house is very dark and very little daylight going in through the windows but the windows look old and dusty. A lot of things in the house are black and this suggests negative thoughts.
As Kipps is walking to the house he passes a graveyard looking very old suggesting that no one had been there looking after the headstones. Also a lot of deaths have happened as there are a few, you wouldn't think there would as it is an isolated area.
They pass a grave marker when on their way to the house. This shows that deaths have happened there.
